Volunteer Opportunities

Get Involved!

Everyone familiar with the Simon Family JCC knows about its state-of-the-art fitness center, cultural arts events, sports leagues, summer camp and Kids Connection. The JCC also participates in many events and activities for the community at large.

We have opportunities for involvement throughout the year!

B.E.A.R (Be A Reader)
The Be A Reader (BEAR) program is a literacy and mentoring project that has been helping elementary school children in the Tidewater Area learn to read for 14 years. Currently, the BEAR program is serving eight schools with over 70 program participants at various schools in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Portsmouth. BEAR volunteers go to an area school for an hour each week and spend quality one–on–one time with a child who has been identified by their teacher as a candidate for literacy mentoring. Time spent with the child helps him or her learn to read; however, it gives the child so much more. BEAR offers children five books to keep and a mentor to help them progress in their development of academic and social skills. Please contact the Simon Family JCC at 321–2338 to mentor a child or make a donation. Be A Reader is made possible through the generous support of First Book and many local individuals like you.
