Meet the Caravan Yanai Scouts!
My name is Avishag Baram, I’m 16 years old, and I have been in the Scouts since 5th grade! I live in Ness Ziona, next to the Mediterranean coast, which isn’t far from Tel Aviv. My family and I love to travel and camp in Israel. We often invite our friends to go with us so they can enjoy the trip as well. My family and I love celebrating holidays together, singing songs loudly around the table, and enjoying traditional food. Additionally, I’m a big music lover. Not only is singing my favorite hobby, I sing in my free time, in ceremonies at school, and at bonfires with friends when we go camping.
Hello, my name is Chen Kessler and I’m 17 years old. I have been in the Scouts since 7th grade and have taken on a variety of different roles. I live in Lehavim, near Beer Sheva in the Negev. One of my favorite things is sports. In my life I’ve tried many different sports: fencing, triathlons, ball games, even MMA. However, my biggest enjoyment in life is music and playing a few instruments, such as the guitar, drums, bass, and a bit of piano that I taught myself. In my free time I play in a band, where I am the lead singer. For the past three years, we have performed in my school’s yearly talent show and have won twice.
My name is Hila Bodner and I am 17 years old. I have been in the Scouts for eight years, which has provided me with great experiences and insights for my life. I live in Tel Mond, in the Sharon area, which is the center of Israel. I enjoy being with my family, especially at our gatherings where we celebrate Jewish holidays, birthdays, and special occasions. I love to paint (oil paints are my favorite) and I even go to drawing class once a week. I also enjoy traveling with my family to places like Eilat in the south of Israel, Mount Hermon in the north of Israel, and hanging out on the busy streets of Tel Aviv.
Hi, my name is Liron Tesler, I am 17 years old and I live in Kfar Mordechai, just half an hour south of Tel Aviv. I have been a part of the Israeli Scouts since 4th grade and I absolutely love it! Not only has it changed and shaped me, it emphasizes the importance of education. I would like to be involved in education in the future. One of my other interests is travelling. My family and I have travelled all over the world to places like Greece, Thailand, Mexico, and all over Israel! Some of my other hobbies are bowling, watching movies, and listening to music. I also enjoy visiting with my friends, talking and laughing for hours!
Hello, my name is Omer Pick and I am 17 years old. I live in city called Shoham, which is a little town in the middle of Israel, next to the Israeli airport. I have been in the Scouts since 4th grade. Last year, I was a counselor for a group of 4th grade boys and this year I’m a counselor for our troop’s band, which is a very professional and unique opportunity. The Israeli Scouts aren’t the only influential aspect of my life. My aunt has a dance studio and I started to dance there when I was 7 years old. After 10 years, not only do I still dance, I perform in shows featuring Oded Paz, a famous actor in Israel.
My name is Matan Ben Ami, I’m 17 years old, and I have been in the Israeli Scouts since the 4th grade. This year, I have been a guide for a group of 7th grade girls. I listen to their personal matters and help them with whatever they need. In addition to the scouts, I’m also an active first aid volunteer at MDA, Israel’s EMT service. I love the work because I can help save someone’s life. In addition, I meet people that are my age that feel great satisfaction from volunteering. When I’m not helping other scouts or volunteering, I like to hang out in Tel Aviv with my friends. We usually go to the beach and check out the wide variety of food, street events, and concerts in the area.
Hi everyone, my name is Omer Ettinger and I’m 16 years old. I live in a moshav called Asseret, which is a unique type of town in Israel that was originally designated for agriculture. I have been a part of the Israeli Scouts since I was in the 4th grade. Since then, it has become a big part of my life. Last year I was the counselor for one amazing girl with special needs. My job was to keep the girl, who has autism, comfortable with the group and help her through challenges. We include everyone in our scout troops, regardless of disability or need, and they participate like any other peer. My biggest passion is dancing, which I’ve been doing since I was three years old. I’ve taken classes in a variety of styles, such as ballet, contemporary, jazz, and choreography.
Hello, my name is Nir Hamou and I am 17 years old. I live in Shoham, a town next to the international airport of Israel. The Israeli Scouts have been an integral part of my life since 4th grade. I have great memories from the trips that I’ve taken and have met many friends on scout excursions. Last year, I was a counselor for a group of 10-year-old kids that I feel extremely close to and regard as my own younger brothers. This year, myself and four friends are counselors for groups of eighth graders. Besides the scouts, I really like sports. In the past, I’ve played soccer, tennis, and even took judo sessions. However, my favorite sport is basketball. I watch as many NBA games as I can, played on a team for three years, and love to play with my friends.
Hello, my name is Shir Zohar and I’m 16 years old. I live in Kiryat Ono, which is a city in the middle of Israel. I have been in the Tzofim, the scouts, since I was about nine years old. It has become such a big part of my life. I met my best friends here! I grew up learning new things and developed social skills I couldn’t have learned anywhere else. In addition, I got to know my country while traveling all over Israel. However, before I was in the scouts, I spent most of my time dancing. I’ve been dancing since I was three years old and now practice in a variety of genre’s, such as hip-hop, modern, and ballet. The stage is definitely my favorite place as dancing makes me feel good, relaxed, and free.
My name is Yoav Komissar and I’m 16 years old. I live in Haifa, a beautiful port city in north Israel. I have been in the Tzofim, the Scouts, since the 4th grade. Last year I was a counselor and this year I am a Scout leader! I enjoy being a scout leader because it is fun. It also gives you the opportunity to influence youth to be better, love their country, and to do good. My real love, however, is for music. In my spare time, I like to DJ and often play music at my friends’ parties. I am really excited about being a part of the Tzofim delegation. I believe it is very important to spread the Israeli spirit across Jewish communities in the U.S. and meet people with a genuine interest in my country. Also, it’s a great opportunity to have some fun during my summer break.
Hello, my name is Chen Halevy and I’m 22 years old. I started my way in the Scouts by participating in the activities in my local Scouts troop. I eventually became a counselor for 5th graders, then supervised the counselors. In my senior year, I was the counselor for 9th graders and taught them how to be good counselors. For the past four years, I have been in the Israeli Defense Force, guiding new recruits through their first steps in the army, became a platoon commander, and helped soldiers get a GED during their last month of service. In early 2018, I was released from the army with the rank of lieutenant. In my free time I enjoy sports, reading, and music. I like to travel in Israel, explore our beautiful country, and spend time with my family.
My name is Tair Atias, and I’m 24 years old. When I was in the 4th grade, I joined the Israeli Scouts youth movement, which quickly became a big part of my life. By 10th grade, I was a counselor for 4th graders. As a junior, I was the counselor for 6th graders and took part in the 2011 Caravan delegation. During my last year, I was a Scoutmaster, taking care of my troop’s logistics, trips, and other projects. After finishing high school, I joined the army, where I served in the Israeli Intelligence Corps for three years. After the military, I worked at a high-tech company, hiked across Israel, and traveled around the world. Now, as a member of the Caravan again, I am very excited. The interaction with American Jewish people – families, campers, teenagers, students, elders – was fun, interesting, and introduced me to a different way of Jewish life. Ever since I came back to Israel, I knew I would want to come back as a leader – and now, 7 years later I got the chance to do it!
